Hatha, Vinyasa, Hot & Power – it may seem like yoga and fitness classes have been twisted every which way, but Fairmont hotels are proving that exercise routines, both ancient and modern, are always ripe for innovation. Whether doing sun salutations on a stand-up paddle board in Hawaii or hanging from a hammock in Scottsdale, Fairmont is bringing yoga (and TRX, and kettlebells) to new levels.
Go with the Flow:Flo-Yo (Floating Yoga) is a total core workout at The Fairmont Orchid, set on Hawaii’s picturesque Big Island. Dedicated yogis and newbies alike use stand up paddleboards to glide out into the ocean waters before performing sun salutations, balancing poses and more through 40 minutes of serene floating yoga that strengthens the core and improves balance.
Take Your Practice to New Heights: Fairmont Scottsdale Princess’ Well & Being at Willow Stream uses a fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling for the incredible experience of Aerial Yoga. This unique practice allows guests to overcome gravity as they glide and release into each soothing pose. Specially trained yoga instructors guide guests through each pose safely, designing classes for everyone, regardless of yoga experience and fitness level.
Greet the Sun (or Moon) with a Salutation: In Bermuda, Fairmont Southampton lets guests rise and shine with Sunrise Yoga on the beach. A flowing Vinyasa Yoga class blending strength, flexibility, and balance, the practice achieves a full body workout alongside an uplifting experience in the most beautiful setting on the island. Meeting at 6.30am, yogis can go through their asanas as the sun rises on this serene Atlantic setting. Every September, Fairmont Singapore offers Full-Moon Yoga during the Mid Autumn Festival in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Just like the effect on the ocean and its changing tides, when the moon is full, there is an effect on the water balance inside the human body. Go Zen with Tai Chi: Fairmont Beijing’s Tai Chi Program teaches this centuries-old technique to guests looking for balance. Dating to the 1600s, the tradition is practiced throughout China as a healthy form of exercise that is distinct from Western-style fitness trends. Through breathing control and synchronized movements that flow with the interchange of Yin and Yang elements, calmness and peace of mind are achieved. A private lesson with the hotel’s Tai Chi Master starts with deep breathing exercises followed by the story of Tai Chi and meditation. Once the mind has been grounded, the Tai Chi Master will teach three of fourteen basic movements per session. Priced at 500 RMB (~$80 USD) per hour per session, lessons are available by appointment.
TRX to the Max: In California, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa has introduced TRX Suspension Training for guests. Born in the Navy SEALs, Suspension Training bodyweight exercise develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously using by the TRX Suspension Trainer, a highly portable performance training tool that leverages gravity and the user’s body weight to complete hundreds of exercises.
Dreams of Hula: At Fairmont Kea Lani, Hula Hooping is the newest craze, where trained instructors in hula hoop fitness utilize brightly-colored hoops that weigh three, four and five pounds to trim waistlines, burn calories and build core muscles. Along with the cardio activity of hula hooping, the hoop is used for stretching and lifting with the arms and legs, offering a full body workout!
Take it to the Kettlebells: Kettlebells have been around for years, but have only recently taken off in popularity. Gerard Butler used the weights to get in shape before starring in 300, and the Crossfit crowd has brought them to the wider fitness community. While many people may not want to try out the newfangled equipment at their home gym, trying it while traveling can be a great introduction – which is why a new class is being offered at Fairmont Pittsburgh. Kettlebells almost mirror a swimming workout, offering cardio and strength training together in one quick exercise. Instead of lifting weights for a half hour and doing the treadmill for another, guests get the best of both worlds.
Crossover to CrossFit: Balance Gym at Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown is cranking up the intensity with CrossFit classes for guests. With 2,400-square-feet of dedicated CrossFit workout space, Balance offers a comprehensive approach to fitness, including sports conditioning and strength training for dedicated fitness buffs. Full-body functional workouts and heart pumping group classes push athletes to their limits through a mixture of techniques – including gymnastics, Olympic lifting, powerlifting, mobility, and aerobic conditioning. Classes cost $20 USD for guests.
Run with a Local: For guests who want to hit the pavement, many Fairmont properties offer jogging maps and more. In Vancouver The Fairmont Waterfront offers morning runs with the General Manager on Vancouver’s seawall through Stanley Park. GM Ian Pullan has participated in several half and full marathons and loves to show off Vancouver – whether for a 10km run around the park’s entire seawall or just a quick morning jaunt. In Montreal Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth’s Run Club departs the lobby every Wednesday and Friday at 6:45am for a 7 km jog. The runners are all staff members of the hotel, and it has become a popular way to combine exercising, getting tips on restaurants or events and seeing the city with a local.
