-Fairmont to Celebrate 2010 with Landmark Hotel Openings
2010 marks a busy year for Fairmont as it readies to open seven new hotels, including two of the world’s most celebrated addresses: The Savoy in London and the Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Paying homage to its original Edwardian and Art Deco design, The Savoy will once again lay claim to its long-standing status as London’s premier social destination when it unveils the culmination of a two-year, £100 million restoration program this summer. A top to bottom endeavor encompassing the entire building, including 268 guestrooms and suites, the courtyard and famed American Bar, the extensive restoration includes a luxurious new Royal Suite and the complete remodel of the legendary River Restaurant. The famous Savoy Grill returns under the operations of Gordon Ramsay Holdings, while new additions include The Beaufort Bar and Savoy Tea, a bijou store offering The Savoy's own teas and fresh patisserie. In Shanghai, Fairmont Peace Hotel is the new name for the restored Peace Hotel, a celebrated landmark for over a century. Situated on the Bund, the 12-story, 269-room property enjoys a premier downtown location, facing the Pudong area over the Hangpu River. Once the height of international glamour, the new hotel will resurrect the much-loved Jazz Bar, a Shanghai institution since the 1930s. The 9th floor will also host the famed Peace Hall, where the property’s iconic sprung-wooden dance floor still evokes memories of old Shanghai cabarets and gala parties. Other hotels opening in 2010 include the Makkah Clock Royal Tower, A Fairmont Hotel in Saudi Arabia and Fairmont Zimbali Resort, among others.
Fairmont Takes Deep Dive into Conservation with April Seafood Promotion
A recognized leader in environmental sustainability and responsible tourism practices, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is diving headfirst into its next green mission: championing ocean conservation and the restoration of living marine resources. Throughout the month of April 2010, Fairmont will raise awareness and funds to protect the world’s waters by serving up sustainable seafood entrees in its restaurants around the globe, while also encouraging its guests to donate $1 to the National Geographic Society (NGS). As a sponsor of National Geographic Mission Programs as well as a member of the World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Savers program, the April seafood event is one in a long line of initiatives undertaken by the hotel group in support of ocean sustainability. In 2008, Fairmont hotels worldwide removed threatened fish species including Chilean Sea Bass and Bluefin Tuna from their restaurant menus and aligned themselves locally with reputable seafood watch organizations, ensuring guests continue to be provided with a comprehensive selection of sustainable seafood choices.
Fairmont Pacific Rim Arrives in Vancouver Fronting one of Vancouver’s best addresses and arriving in time for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Fairmont Pacific Rim opened its doors in grand fashion in early February. With unobstructed views of the city’s North Shore Mountains, Stanley Park and Coal Harbour, guests are treated to the vistas that have transfixed travelers since Captain Vancouver arrived in 1792. A downtown oasis, the hotel was designed to five star standards with resort features such as a rooftop swimming pool, meditation pods, outdoor fireplaces, and a spa. Notable features of the new 377-room, state-of-the-art hotel include a marble-clad lobby sporting a one-of-a-kind $225.000 Fazioli piano, a nine-treatment room Willow Stream Spa, and the Pan-Asian bistro ORU. Of particular note for art lovers is the building’s external art feature, a million dollar exhibit created by UK artist Liam Gillick that wraps around the hotel from floors five through 22. Introductory rates through June 30, 2010 start from $229 for a guestroom and $299 for Fairmont Gold, which includes butler services.
Learning Hits the Road with Apprentice-Trips by Fairmont
Fairmont is encouraging travelers to take home more than just a few photos from their next vacation with the launch of Apprentice-Trips by Fairmont, a collection of learning-based travel experiences that help guests acquire a new talent or brush up on a favorite hobby. Fairmont Launches Virtual Gathering Place for Guests
With social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook reshaping the way people communicate, Fairmont has rolled out a new online community platform for its guests: www.everyonesanoriginal.com (EAO). A mix of customer-generated media and non-traditional Fairmont content, the new site is an interactive online environment where fans of the brand can post photos or share video from a memorable trip, participate in exclusive polls and contests, access exclusive hotel and destination content, and engage in dialogue with other site users about their Fairmont travel experiences. The site is full of interesting and useful Fairmont information, ranging from tasty recipes and signature cocktail ideas to historical anecdotes and captivating “did you knows?” about one-of-a-kind moments that have taken place at Fairmont throughout the ages. To kick off the new site, Fairmont is running an Original Memories Photo Contest with the Grand Prize consisting of a five-night Fairmont stay and $1.000 airfare credit.

With diners saying ciao to comfort foods and farewell to fusion, what’s in fashion with foodies this year? According to the in-the-know chefs and restaurant operators at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, it’s not one thing, but several things that are influencing the dining habitats of culinary enthusiasts around the world. At The Fairmont Banff Springs, patrons have given new meaning to the traditional Sunday brunch by showing up on entirely different day: Saturday. As a result, the hotel has introduced the Bow Valley Grill's expansive buffet brunch throughout the entire weekend and is looking at offering exclusive menu items on each day. Much to the delight of diners, fresh is in season at Fairmont Pacific Rim with the opening of Pan-Asian bistro, ORU. Featuring an innovative scratch kitchen, the restaurant’s authentic dishes take local to entirely new level with all breads, pastries, noodles, tofu, and even head cheese being made onsite. Does value ever really go out of style? Most think not and The Fairmont Orchid in Hawaii agrees. Recently, the hotel introduced 'Ohana Plates at its oceanfront restaurant, Hale Kai. With over nine different entrees to choose from, the family style offerings combine value and variety with a range of sides like edamame, potato mac salad, green papaya slaw, and more. Art Scene Arrives at, or Should We Say in, Fairmont Hotels
Cultural offerings and enriching experiences are plentiful at Fairmont, but some Fairmont hotels are taking art appreciation to new heights with the introduction of art-inspired features and openings of in-hotel art galleries. At The Fairmont Dallas, the hotel recently teamed up with local artist Bryan Embry to debut the Ross Akard Gallery at The Fairmont Dallas, the first art gallery to open in the city’s famed Arts District in three decades. At Boston’s Fairmont Battery Wharf, hotel guests can tour the on-property Battery Wharf Maritime Museum, a 1,000 square foot museum, free to the public, featuring exhibits about the maritime history of the area and of Boston. In Vancouver, art plays a leading role at the recently opened Fairmont Pacific Rim, starting with the exterior of the building and carrying through the lobby, public spaces and guestrooms. Of particular note is the hotel’s exterior art feature, which wraps around half of the building’s façade causing pedestrians to stop and decipher the running line of text, while the other side glistens silver in the sun from a “rice wall” and teases with an image that only comes into view from a distance. Home to a truly unique and impressive collection of indigenous African artwork is Mount Kenya Art Galleries located at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club. Here, serious collectors and novice enthusiasts can discover new and old pieces, many with cultural significance, from some of the continent’s most talented artists.
Take a Summer Dip in One of These Cool Pools
The distinctive locales of Fairmont make the ideal setting for a great poolside escape. This spring, the new Fairmont Pacific Rim in Vancouver will open its very own roof top pool, complete with private cabanas and fire pits for guests to lounge around. Abu Dhabi’s Fairmont Bab Al Bahr has set the bar high as Fairmont’s first property to open in the capital of United Arab Emirates with 2 outdoor terrace swimming pools with spectacular views of the Abu Dhabi Creek. This summer, Cairo’s hippest outdoor hotspot will be the Sky Pool at the Fairmont Nile City. Located on the hotel’s 25th floor, the pool offers a spectacular view of the Nile, not to mention an extensive menu of poolside cocktails, luxuriant massages in private cabanas, a floating bar and more. One of Fairmont’s most adorable (and mischievous) guests Eloise, the fictional heroine of Kay Thompson’s classic and best-selling books, has always treated the luxurious Plaza Hotel as her own personal playground. With the opening of the hotel’s new Eloise Shop, she, along with her fans around the world, will now have a “playhouse” all their own. As irresistibly engaging as the fictional six year-old heroine herself, who “moved into” The Plaza in 1955 with pet pug Weenie, turtle Skipperdee and her “mostly companion” Nanny, the new Eloise shop is designed to delight and entertain. Playfully decorated to be faithful to Eloise’s indomitable spirit and distinctive color palette of pink and black, the 2.100-square-foot Eloise Shop offers a place for young and old to relive their most memorable Eloise moments or shop for Eloise-inspired items like books and bathrobes. Enthusiasts wanting to immerse themselves in the Eloise spirit can opt for dress up in the store’s Fashion Room or partake in a little pampering in the Beauty Salon. And of course, fans can’t leave without a visit to the Tea Room where family and friends can come together for high tea, birthday parties and other celebrations. Summer is around the corner at Willow Stream Spas, and there are many treatments that celebrate the sun and the sea while also providing healthy, energizing benefits. The Fairmont Yangcheng Lake in China offers a refreshing Lakeside Mineral Scrub for guests who want a rejuvenating experience by the lake’s beautiful waters. At Fairmont Pacific Rim, which recently opened in Vancouver, the Great Canadian Facial uses refreshing glacial water from around British Columbia to bathe the skin before continuing with a peel, mask and massage. At Fairmont Le Montreux Palace in Switzerland, the Naturally Tan treatment provides a rich glow without the harmful effects of the sun, and uses only natural ingredients. Guests who want to keep cool at Fairmont Southampton in Bermuda can try the Island Inspiration Body Sorbet, which includes a rich, moisturizing cream massaged into the skin, followed by a sorbet application and a comforting wrap for a delicious island glow. At Fairmont Monte Carlo, the detoxifying Monaco Power of the Sea treatment is a great way to start off the summer, and includes Kerstin Florian International’s thalasso kur and body wrap, rich with re-mineralizing sea algae. Many Fairmonts Decide to Put a Cork In It
The perfect match to a fine meal is a fine wine, and to make sure guests have access to the best regional vintages available, many Fairmont hotels have begun to serve up private label bottles in their restaurants to complement their chefs’ local menus and dishes. Not long ago, The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn “rented” a row of Robledo Family Winery grapes from the Carneros region to create a specialty wine just for hotel guests to enjoy as they relax in the heart of wine country. In the Canadian Rockies, The Fairmont Banff Springs, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise have created delicious private vintages under their own Mission Hill label. Helping guests appreciate Swiss wine is the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, which also created red and white local vintages which are served up in La Brasserie du Palace, the hotel’s gourmet restaurant. And at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, the culinary team partners with Chateau Des Charmes to bottle wine for the hotel using grapes that come from a vineyard in the nearby Niagara region.
Hotels Gear Up for Another Buzzing Summer
Fairmont chefs across North America are getting ready for an influx of delicious, local honey as they welcome back the resident bees of their onsite herb gardens. The Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver is preparing for their return by offering a Birds & Bees package, which includes a personal herb garden tour and hive visit along with a honey-themed welcome amenity and breakfast buffet for two. After their debut last summer, the three hives at The Fairmont Washington, D.C. - Casa Bella, Casa Blanca and Casa Bianca – are also getting ready for another summer of producing honey for the hotel’s delicious menu of organic cocktails. And coming off a third place finish at Toronto’s 2009 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, The Fairmont Royal York’s rooftop apiary will again be cultivated by the hotel’s chef to create a year of delicious menu items. At Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec and The Fairmont Algonquin in New Brunswick, guests with a sweet tooth can even buy some of the local harvest directly from the hotel’s gift shops.
